Day 2

2 April 2016
Saturday
Prithvi Theatre

The second day at Writers' Bloc began with a lot of spilled over excitement from the previous day. Our Art Exhibition, called 'Stories beyond the Stage' opened in the morning and will continue to play host to art enthusiasts for the rest of the days at Prithvi. Swing by Prithvi House for your dose of artistic expression, in form of sculptures, paintings, cartoons and much more.

We also had a well-recieved reading of Nandita DaCunha's 'Side Effects'. The reading was directed by Trishla Patel and had a very diverse cast ranging from veterans like Shernaz Patel and Sohrad Ardeshir to the very young pre-teen but equally fabulous Kamya Ramchandran. Anand Tiwari started his much-in-demand workshop on writing for the web at The Easel. One of the first workshops to be full, it quickly became clear why. His easy wit and excellent insights is what makes the actor-writer stand apart. The Singer-Songwriter of the day was Cyli Khare and she  mesmerized the audience with her strong, soulful voice and renditions of Marathi and Bihari songs. Her music was truly the 'chamcham on the mithai' for the day.

The first show of Janak opened with a decent house at 6pm. However, two hours later we had the entire audience come out of the Prithvi smiling and loving the play. The 9pm show was peppered by known faces from the Marathi theatre fraternity and another good show was in line for Team Janak. They will now perform at NCPA Exp on April 13.

Day 2 of the festival also brought a necessary change from the very busy Day 1. The festival has settled in and we look forward to a great week at Prithvi Theatre.

Here's what our Day 2 was:

Play of the Day

What happens when a family is let down by the system they wholeheartedly believed in? Should they accept it for what it is or leave it all behind and strive for something better? Being a true family, they obviously have different ideas on how to deal with it, resulting in some very humorous - and insightful - situations.
‘Janak’ is a satire and like all satires, it holds a mirror to our lives and will make us laugh at ourselves, and at the sometimes ridiculous positions we find ourselves in, at the hands of the System.

Playwright-Director's Note
“The very interesting part of this process was that I had to switch off my director button when I had to re-write any scenes and when I had to direct the scenes, I had to switch off my writer button. I enjoyed this process a lot.”
“Janak means father. Or should I say a GODFATHER…? The one who controls everything, the one who takes all decisions… My play is about the same thing - someone trying to get complete control over me and my decisions. That’s why the name.” - Shardul Saraf
