Day 3

3 April 2016
Sunday
Prithvi Theatre

Day 3 at Prithvi redeemed the flow and the energy of the festival so far but also took it one step ahead in terms of excitement. It was a busy day in terms of workshop because we had three workshops going on at The Easel one after the other. The day began with the second session of Anand Tiwari's web-writing workshop. It also marked the last day of Arshia Sattar's workshop 'See for Critique'. After a very interactive and enlightening session, the participants proceeded to watch one last play as a part of the workshop. Yesterday was also the last session for Rochelle D'silva's Poetry Peformance workshop, and the group adjourned until the 10th when they will be meeting again for a performance and an open mic at the Easel, 6:30pm.
It was also a big day in terms of the discussions at Prithvi House. 5:00 pm saw an excellent, extremely progressive and feminist panel discussing the importance of Loitering. The discussion was based on the book 'Why Loiter' which has given rise to a movement and even a play. The audience had some savvy questions, which were moderated by Arshia Sattar and left the premise with new insights on freedom and of course, loitering.

7:30 saw the very talented Yuki Ellias perform excerpts from her solo comedy piece 'Dying to Succed? Don't Kill Yourself'. With her enactments of characters from Shakespeare play in boardroom meetings and corporate offices, she had the audience in splits the entire time.
The evening also saw an enchanting musical performance by Gagan Dev Riar as listener crowded in the Prithvi Courtyard and so bewitched were they, refused to budge until the first bell for the actual play.

Outer Dilli also received some great response. Both shows opened to packed house and saw quite a few popular faces from the theatre fraternity in attendance. In case you couldn't make it, or had to return disappointed because of the Housefull board outside Prithvi
Theatre, do not worry. The play will be performed once again at NCPA Exp on April 16, 7:30 pm. Our mural artist Kanak Nanda has also been gather praise for her depiction of each day's play in a painting that the manages to create in just an hour between 4 to 5 everyday.

Play of the Day

Meet Ravi, who hails from a village in UP and has recently migrated to ‘Outer Dilli’ to join his family. In this new and unfamiliar territory, he discovers that he is at best, just another new student in class; at worst, a fair innocent boy who is easy prey for other boys. Now he must decide - will he fight and live? Or be humiliated and merely survive? Outer Dilli is a reminder that coming of age is rarely easy on the young.

Playwright's Note
“The word ‘Outer’ (in the title) is reflective of how the people at the periphery of the city feel about their sense of belonging to the city at large. The protagonist Ravi is one such example. He constantly struggles to belong and to achieve a status, just like all the places at the outskirts of Delhi constantly fight for legitimacy.” - Rahul Rai

Director's Note
“Rahul Rai has been extremely generous, open and more than helpful throughout the rehearsal process. He has been forthright with his ideas and very accepting of mine. It is has been an honour and a challenge to direct such a layered and poignant play.” - Shivani Tanksale
